Holi 2024: What Do the Colors Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink, Green, Blue, and Purple Symbolise? - News18

Living in poverty and bound by tradition, thousands of Hindu widows in the sacred city of Vrindavan lead lives of austerity. Yet, the festival of Holi offers them a fleeting chance to experience joy and color, breaking away from their difficult realities.

Vrindavan, associated with Lord Krishna's childhood, has long been a refuge for widowed Hindu women. In Hindu society, widowhood is often stigmatized, with widows expected to live in austerity and avoid participating in celebratory events. Viewed as a financial burden, many widows migrate to holy towns like Vrindavan, relying on charity from the State, NGOs, temples, and ashrams to survive.

During Holi, however, these women are given an opportunity to momentarily defy tradition and enjoy the festive spirit, adding a rare splash of color and fun to their otherwise challenging lives.
