Punjab BJP Seeks to Turn the Tide After Mann Government's Crackdown on Farmers' Protests

Punjab BJP Leaders Meet PM Modi Today

After the dismantling of farmer protest sites at Shambhu and Khanauri, the Punjab BJP is stepping up its outreach to farmers, aiming to reshape the narrative as a “battle between AAP and farmers.”

The recent actions taken by the Mann government have given a boost to the Punjab BJP at the grassroots level. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar criticized the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for its inconsistent stance on the farmer protests. On March 19, the AAP government cleared protest sites at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, which had been major points of contention.

Jakhar pointed out the hypocrisy of the AAP, claiming they initially supported the protests and encouraged farmers to stage sit-ins, but were now taking credit for clearing the sites, possibly to gain political advantage in the upcoming Ludhiana West by-election.

Jakhar's remarks signal a shift in strategy for the BJP, which faced significant backlash during the farm protests. A senior BJP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that the party intends to “reframe” the issue, emphasizing that the farmers felt “humiliated” and may have realized that the AAP government used them for political gain, only to discard them afterward.
